I first purchased one of those hdmi splitter boxes (1 in 2 outs). These have a power adapter, and you do not need to push a button to indicate which output you"re watching. It was this one: HDMI Splitter 1 in 2 Out 1080P Ver 1.4 Powered Amplifier I wrote a review on that box as well: http://www.amazon.com/review/R1215VBOV6C7SN/ref=cm_cr_rdp_perm
However, the problem with those boxes with power adapters is that they get extremely hot. We realize that after binge watching the Walking Dead, we started to get drop signals and static. I know for sure they are directly correlated. So I returned the product and tried out this bi-directional switch product. This same Portta switch is also sold under the Sewell name for $25, as well as Fosmon for $18, but they are all identical, they just have different companies slap their brand names and logos on them. If you believe in the brand name behind the product and their customer service, then pay more. But in this case, I have never heard of any of these companies, so I chose the lowest pricing from Portta. And I"m here to report that at least in my case, this bi-direction box is waaaaaaay better than the previous switch I returned. Since there is no power adapter, this switch is simply an extension of your HDMI cables, and it stays absolutely cool even if you watch TV all day. However the connection is sensitive. It"s not like RCA or component cables where the connections are solid and you can be moving cables around and your signal would still be good. So after plugging in your HDMIs, expect to get dropped connections if you"re going to still be behind the tv moving cables around. But once you"re settled and happy with all your connections, give the hdmi cables that connects to the switch one last secure push, and leave it alone.
This product has worked flawless for us. My source that I"m splitting is my TIVO. One HDMI goes directly to the TV so family members can just watch by turning on the TV. And the other HDMI goes to my A/V system for when the man of the house (me) is watching TV. LOL! My family doesn"t know how to work the AV system and they hate multiple controllers, so this is why I have to do this. Lastly, since this is bi-directional, this means you can use the switch in reverse manner sharing two devices with one hdmi output. 1 in 2 out, or 2 in 1 out. A minor con is that you do have to manually push the switch button to choose what output you want to watch. SO THIS IS NOT FOR THOSE LOOKING FOR SIMULTANEOUS VIEWING ON TWO SCREENS.
If simultaneous viewing is not your objective, and you just want to split a signal for purposes similar to mine, then I don"t see why this wouldn"t work for you as it did for me. And if your objective is similar to mine, then trust me, go with bi-directional switches, they do not get hot at all.
